for those fortunate enough to be in Rathcooney yesterday for the U16s Munster Cup 1/4 Final ye treated to hotly contested game between 2 evenly matched teams. This game was to keep us on the edge of our seats from start to finish.
Our boys started brightly a couple of hard carries from Brian & Chris and then our half backs Donnacha and Dav spreading the ball through our backs saw us go close on a couple of occasions, but a knock on or final forced pass unfortunately ended these promising moves. We had Cashel camped inside their own 22 but their resolute defence was broken on the 5 minute mark when Chris broke their defence line and crashed over the line to put our first try on the board, Dav dually converted to make the score 7-0 to Old Christians. Cashel to their credit started to work their way back into the game by putting pressure on the Old Christians try line, but the boys defended manfully and held the attacks up on a couple of occasions. But that defence was to be broken 2 twice in the matter of 2 minutes in the 20 & 22 with both tries being converted to make the score now 7 to 14 to Cashel. Our boys were stung but responded like they always do by putting constant pressure on the Cashel defence and were rewarded on the stroke of halftime with Chris again leaving the Cashel defence in his wake to score his second of the day. Dav again superbly converted a difficult conversion which made the score tied 14 - 14 on the stroke of halftime.
The second half started with Old Christians playing down the hill and with a slight breeze at their backs, the early minutes of the second half were being played in the Cashel half. Our were putting the early second half pressure on in side the Cashel 22, but were caught out after a Cashel turnover inside their own 22 led to a speculative pressure releaving kick not being dealt with properly a further kick through lead to Cashel scoring a try in 35th min, this try was superbly converted by the Cashel 12 and Old Christians now trailed by 14- 21. Our lads again dug deep to get themselves back into the game and were in no humour to let the dust settle 5 mins later they scored from a storming carry from Brian in the 40th min with Mark converting on this occasion.
Game now tied 21-21 each, this game was now in the balance. We now had a real battle on our hands and our guys stepped up big time, furious defence and repeated pressure on a Cashel rear guard eventually paid off when a well constructed move from a ruck on the left hand side was put through the hands and with Tom joining the line it was his pass put the returning Matt Laffan away on the right to score in the corner on 49 minutes, try unconverted. Score now was 26-21 to Old Christians entering the final 10 nail bitting minutes. Our lads defence in the last 10 minutes was indeed heroic with Cashel now to their credit throwing the Kitchen sink at them, in this epic encounter it was fitting that a great turnover by our defence was the final act in this tremendous game of Rugby. Games of this intensity unfortunately don't come without casualties, We wish Ronnie Og , Donnacha and Eoin speedy recoveries from their injuries and to all who attended or helped in any way on the day thank you again for all your help and support.
We now move forward to the Semi final of what is the Premier Competition in Munster at the U16 level. So your support will be appreciated more than ever in the coming weeks.
Thank you again.
Well Done to Dav & team yesterday ye all have done the Club and yer parents proud.๐๐๐๐ง๐ช
