Old Christians RFC 31:5 Ballincollig RFC
The u16s, 3rd round fixture was played in miserable wet conditions today against Ballincollig RFC. The lads began the game with real attacking intent and after some good carries and a dinked ball over the defensive line found themselves at the 5 meter line. The forwards piled on the pressure and Shayden touched down under the posts. 7:0 up with conversion from Kayden. Ballincollig came at us from the restart and were made work hard for every inch of territory gained. After a few minutes of soaking up pressure, we turned over the ball and shortly afterwards Eoghan H carried from near our own 22 to Ballincolligs 22. He was supported well and after some good runs from Eoin D and Odhran C which brought us to the 5, and again some quick play from the pack allowed oisin to go over under the posts once again. Conversion dispatch by Kayden to make it 14 - 0 on the 9th minute.
Again Ballincollig came at the lads, and a real back and forth battle took place. Both teams carrying and defending well. Eventually our lads made some hard yards and got to the collig 5 again. After a penalty, a quick move saw Eoin D, go over in the corner, 19:0. No further scores in the 1st half despite the best efforts of both teams.
We knew Ballincollig would come out fighting and they did just that. In fairness our lads made them work hard for their gains, but a good move from collig down the left side, saw them get close. A penalty later and they got over in the corner, 19:5. Ballincollig would have good spells of possession over the next 15 to 20 mins, but our lads put an enormous effort on the defensive end despite the conditions making it increasingly tough to tackle. We soaked up everything they threw at us in the middle third and eventually we started to get more possession ourselves.
A great set piece play from the scrum saw Eoin D carry well from the back of the scrum and passed it to Cian who finished the move clinically in the corner, 24:5. Our lads weren't done, and again after some nice passing in the middle third, Kayden broke through a few tackles and touch down near the posts. His conversion made it 31:5 and that was to remain the final score.
A deserved win against a very strong & determined Ballincollig side. The win was a testament to the hard work the lads are putting in on training nights and the heart and effort they're showing on game days. The whole squad deserve great credit. Today they were lead by Kayden who put in a real captains and MOTM performance.
