Mc Carthy Cup Final
Old Christians 14 Kanturk and District 42
The North Cork Collective proved a little too strong for our gallant J2 squad in the McCarthy Cup Final at Musgrave Park today.
We started well and the always lively Ivan Tripp scampered over for an early try, with Rob McKenna adding the points.
Seven minutes in, we suffered a soft yellow card and Charleville took advantage with two converted tries on ten and fifteen minutes.
At 14 pts to 7, we were well in the game, including being held up over the Charleville line.
Two quick errors however, giving up an intercept while attacking in their 22 and failing to deal with a bouncing ball in our own 22, saw us trail 26 pts to 7 at the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, Charleville added a penalty and on the quarter hour mark, they had their only try of the half. They added a penalty on twenty five minutes to push the score out to 39 points to 7.
We kept going however and Rob got over for a try thirty five minutes in.
Liam Carthy converted with a fine kick.
Charleville had the last say with a penalty on full time to leave the final score 42 points to 14.
We did quite well possession and territory wise and regularly got over the gain line, but the support was not always there.
There were quite a number of young players in this squad and certainly a number of good prospects if they show the required interest.
At the other end of the scale, with rotating subs, "Hank" O'Callaghen made a short appearance, making two half breaks and fielding a dangerous kick.
