our U16 Development Squad got their Season off to a winning start today in Rathcooney defeating a good Ballincollig side by 24- 19.
This was a very tight game between 2 evenly matched teams. Old Christians got off to a great start after 6 minutes when Jake Varley crashed over and Kayden dually converted making the score 7-0 to Old Christians. Shortly afterwards Ballincollig crossed for a try ( not converted ) making the score now 7-5. To the lads credit they kept working hard and again were rewarded with a try after some great phases of play with Eoin O Donoghue scoring in the corner. Difficult conversion not converted on this occasion score now 12- 5 Old Christians. 5 minutes later Ronnie Og Hennessy capped off a fine display with a well deserved try, on this occasion Kayden converted which now stretched Old Christians lead to 19 -5. To Ballincolligs credit they weren't going to go quietly and managed to score a converted try on the stroke of halftime. Score at the 19-12. Now it was game on. Ballincollig started the second half like they meant business and had the Old Christians boys defending for long periods, but a score finally came with Ballincollig scoring a converted try under the posts, the sides were now tied at 19- 19 heading into the final 10 minutes. With Kayden now off the field injured Elliott now took over at Outhalf and it was him who start and finish a move which was to be the winning score crossing in the corner making the score now 24-19 to Old Christians at the final whistle.
Congratulations to all involved, Coach Richie and the whole squad for edging a very close game a lot of good things, but also a lot to work on.
